“If my running and fundraising means one less person has to suffer, it’s absolutely worth it.” | Natalie’s Story
Natalie Gurney, 41, from Merstham, Surrey, is no stranger to the challenges of cancer. Having lost her mum to breast cancer in October 2023 after a brave three-year battle, Natalie has dedicated herself to raising money for Cancer Research UK. Her motivation to fundraise comes from a deeply personal place, as she has witnessed first hand the devastating impact of cancer on her family. Her father was also diagnosed with breast cancer, but thanks to research and treatment, he continues to thrive today.
“The hardest thing I’ve ever had to do was watch my mum lose her fight while feeling utterly helpless,” Natalie recalls. But through this heartache, she has found incredible strength. “She gives me the power to take on new challenges, so I can continue raising money for Cancer Research UK. If my running and fundraising means one less person has to suffer, it’s absolutely worth it.”
“Taking part in the Winter Run means a lot – I continually try to beat my fundraising targets, and every run I do is in memory of my mum. She’s with me every step of the way, pushing me to do better and better,” Natalie explains.
Her passion for running began in 2017, and since then, Natalie has transformed from a novice into an accomplished runner, participating in a variety of events including 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons, and even completing the Brighton Marathon in April 2024. “I love seeing how far I can push myself,” she says, but it’s the atmosphere and support of the Cancer Research UK London Winter Run that keep her coming back. “The support is wonderful, both on the route and at the finish line, and the organisation is brilliant.”
Natalie’s commitment to fundraising for Cancer Research UK is a deeply personal mission, but it also reflects a broader passion to fight for a future where no one has to experience the pain of losing a loved one to cancer.
As she looks ahead to the 2025 Cancer Research UK London Winter Run, Natalie remains motivated by the memory of her mum and the belief that every step she takes brings us closer to a world where cancer no longer claims lives.
