“It’s such a special feeling to be surrounded by so many people, all united in the same goal of beating cancer.” | Caroline’s Story
For Caroline Cooke, 55, from London, the Cancer Research UK London Winter Run is both a personal and heartfelt challenge. This February, she’s taking on the 10k run in memory of her dear friend, Carole, who passed away in June 2021 after a five-year battle with cancer.
“Carole and I met on my first day at Liverpool University and became firm friends,” Caroline recalls. “We even shared a house and stayed close over the years, despite her moving to Spain and Gibraltar. We’d see each other every summer, and our children were similar ages.”
Carole’s strength and positivity left a lasting impression on Caroline. “She kept her diagnosis fairly private so she didn’t become defined by cancer,” Caroline explains. “She continued to live her life and be the best wife, mum, and friend to so many. She was truly incredible.”
Caroline is running not only in Carole’s memory but also to honour other friends and family affected by cancer. “I wanted to do this run in memory of Carole and for all my friends who have lost loved ones to cancer,” she says. “It’s also a way to thank the people who supported me and celebrate those who are currently cancer-free thanks to life-saving treatments.”
This year’s Winter Run represents a significant milestone for Caroline. After suffering from severe arthritis that left her struggling to walk, she underwent a hip replacement in December 2023.
“This time last year, I couldn’t even walk across the room without limping,” Caroline reflects. “As well as fundraising for Cancer Research UK, this run is a personal challenge to help me get back to full fitness.”
Although she has taken part in the Winter Run once before, six years ago, this year’s event feels particularly daunting. “I know it’s going to be tough—and probably very cold—but I’m ready to give it my all,” Caroline says.
What Caroline is most looking forward to is the atmosphere on the day. “The energy of the supporters along the route is amazing,” she says. “It’s such a special feeling to be surrounded by so many people, all united in the same goal of beating cancer.”
Caroline also hopes her participation will inspire others to take action. “Raising money for research is so important,” she says. “The work funded by Cancer Research UK saves lives, and I want to do my part to help ensure more people have a chance to beat this disease.”
Caroline’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact we can all make when we come together. Whether it’s in memory of a loved one, as a celebration of recovery, or as a personal challenge, the London Winter Run is an opportunity to make a real difference.
