Buzzing atmosphere, new friends and a very shiny medal: one volunteer’s experience!

The Cancer Research UK London Winter Run is an amazing fun which inspires a sense of fun, achievement and pride in all those who cross that finish line. It is also a rewarding experience for our volunteers (302 in total this year!), many of whom return year on year to get involved in the action.

We caught up with one lovely volunteer Asher to tell us a bit more about her experience on the big day.

Asher’s experience

I always look forward to the Cancer Research UK London Winter Run, having run in the event twice and volunteered as part of the Finish Line Team in 2019 and this year in 2023. As I am on the email list for both volunteers and runners, I got to hear about the opportunity to volunteer through email communications. It was so easy to sign-up and be placed into an awesome role!

I was prompted to volunteer at Cancer Research UK London Winter Run as when I ran the event for the first time myself, one of the main things I remember was how wonderful, encouraging, helpful and amazing the volunteers were; I may not have made it to the finish line without them. I wanted to give back the support and encouragement I received myself to others. A volunteers role is very important, as that one person can make a massive difference to how you’re feeling at a time of self doubt.

As always at this year’s event, everything was well co-ordinated. The instructions on travel, directions, who to look out for and the role itself were clear and there was no confusion. As I volunteer on my own, I always end up making new friends and the staff are extremely helpful and friendly especially Vivette and Hannah (Finish Line Team Leader).

I would encourage as many people as possible to ‘go for it’ and volunteer at this event. It’s such a buzzing atmosphere – so much fun, a sense of achievement and you won’t regret it! Sometimes you are that one special volunteer who helps get someone over the finish line when they feel like that can’t make it. You also get a bit of bling for your doing your thing! All volunteers were presented with a nice shiny volunteering medal for their work. It’s nice to give back, meet loads of people from all different walks of life.

I would like to say thank you to all the Cancer Research UK London Winter Run Team for all their hard work and for putting together such an amazing event! Looking forward to joining you again next year! See you in 2024!
