London Winter Wander aims to beat isolation through walking

New walking event hopes to get everybody involved in massive event weekend. The London Winter Wander, The walking event in its second year will take place Sunday 3rd February, and aims to help beat isolation and inactivity by getting residents in the capital outside.

Walkers will start from several locations around London, before being led in groups to an incredible finish line by Trafalgar Square, where they can join the celebrations taking place around the 24,000 person Cancer Research UK London Winter Run 10k. Each walk is expected to take between 60 and 90 minutes, with every finisher receiving a commemorative bespoke medal and be welcomed by the famous winter run hugging polar bears. Live music and photo opportunities will be waiting for walkers in the famous square.

The event is supported by London Sport, who are aiming to change lives by getting one million people in the capital more active. The walk is organised by Human Race, who are responsible for the Cancer Research UK London Winter Run, as well as major events such as the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon and the Royal Windsor Triathlon.

Nick Rusling, CEO of Human Race, said “We are determined to ensure that our events have a positive impact on those who live and work locally. It’s our passion to get people active during the winter months, when it’s all too easy to hibernate, and this can lead to isolation and loneliness. The physical and mental benefits to meeting up with others and walking are unquestionable, so it was a real no brainer for us to put this event on. Plus we know it’s going to be loads of fun for us and those taking part”.

A large number of Londoners over the age of 55 will be eligible to take part for free, with affordable entry for everybody else.
