“It’s partly about saying thank you for the research and treatment, but also because the statistics around cancer are still so shocking.” | Karen and the Big Strong Lasses

In July 2021, after being diagnosed with breast cancer, a new chapter of resilience began for Karen. The experience led her to not only focus on recovery but also to find ways to give back. “It’s partly about saying thank you for the research and treatment, but also because the statistics around cancer are still so shocking.”

As she completed her treatment, she discovered an online weight training group called Big Strong Lasses, a community of women who have been affected by breast cancer. Whilst founded in the UK, the Big Strong Lasses also have members from France, Ireland, Canada and the US that join them. Led by cancer exercise specialist Carolyn Garritt, who started the group after her own diagnosis, these women come together weekly to lift weights, share their experiences, and offer mutual support.

The group’s motto, “Stronger Together,” reflects their journey, and it didn’t take long before some members wanted to take on a new challenge – running. For many of the Lasses, running was a completely new experience. “I began running in September 2022 after my treatment ended. I’d never run before and wasn’t in great shape physically or mentally, but I wanted to do something to support my recovery.”

The Cancer Research UK London Winter Run became the perfect opportunity for the Big Strong Lasses to come together in person. “To be able to physically run ten kilometres after a year of cancer treatment, and never having run before, is incredibly emotional,” she says. “To do it with a group of women in similar situations is life-affirming. There is a special level of understanding and support.”

The group’s first run together last year was a powerful moment. “The best part was meeting each other in person for the first time, after so many online sessions. Seeing our fundraising totals rise was also amazing.”

This year, they’ll be running again, both to inspire those facing a recent diagnosis and to support their own recovery. “We are running the Winter Run for those who cannot, and hopefully to inspire others. For us, it’s priceless.”
