COOL RUNNINGS (1993)

What’s it About?

Based on the true story of the Jamaican bobsleigh team entering the Winter Olympics, this classic comedy follows their reluctant and haphazard beginnings through to their appearance on a world stage.

Why should I watch it?

A hilarious underdog story, this enjoyable adventure fits the Cancer Research UK London Winter Run mould as a winter-based sporting triumph that doesn’t take itself too seriously. One of John Candy’s great performances. You might even pick your own lucky egg to kiss before your 10k.

RUN FATBOY RUN (2007)

What’s it About?

Simon Pegg stars as Denise, who is attempting to get super fit to win back his ex-partner. How best to do this? Train for an epic running event in London of course! The film is directed by Friends alumni David Schwimmer.

Why should I watch it?

Whilst maybe not the most realistic depiction of training for a major running event, it does give you a taste of the glory you can expect based on training hard to improve your own performance.

EDDIE THE EAGLE (2016)

What’s it About?

The true story of Michael Edwards, the man who became a national phenomenon when he became the first person to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping for 60 years. It follows his journey to the world’s largest stage, the only problem is, he’s not particularly good.

Why should I watch it?

Plenty of funny and picturesque winter action, with sterling performances from Taron Egerton, High Jackman, and Christopher Walken. If you don’t think you can achieve a 10k, watch this and you’ll soon be motivated.

BRITTANY RUNS A MARATHON (2019)

What’s it About?

After a doctor advises Brittany (Jillian Bell) she needs to lose weight, she takes up running. It’s a heartwarming true story based on Brittany O’Neill, who completed the New York Marathon in 2014.

Why should I watch it?

With a tremendous Rotten Tomatoes score (88% critics, 87% audience) it’s a genuinely funny movie that will motivate you to get out on the streets and begin your training.

I, TONYA (2019)

What’s it About?

Margot Robbie stars as Tonya Harding, a troubled but talented ice skater who works hard to reach the Winter Olympics but is accused of assaulting her rival. If you fancy something a little darker, but still with a few laughs, then this is the winter-based sport movie for you.

Why should I watch it?

Whilst it might not be as directly motivational as the other suggestions on this list, you can expect to be transported into the winter sporting world, getting you excited for your very own 10k expedition.
